SUMM SUMM SUMM

It is my story of the bees that i am telling you. I first encountered bees up close and personal two years ago when i was visiting a beekeeper. A drone sat on my hand. It buzzed me. I got goosebumps from sheer joy. Ever since that encounter, i have always enjoyed beautiful moments with a bee. When i was drawing this book, a carpenter bee visited me. With a loud hum, she flew peacefully around me, only to fly towards the sun again. There are around 500 species in Germany. Unfortunately, more and more bee species are dying. They get sick and fight the Varroa mite. Our bees need more habitat and fewer monocultures, insecticides and concrete surfaces. It is all the more important that we create more habitats in our gardens so htat diversity remains high. The bee is the mirror of our environment. Think about climate change. Who pollinates our plants for our food, if they went extinct. We need the bees.

ART
UNTITLED

The graphics created by Jonathan Steffens take advantage of the effect of well-directed interference: Motion is cut into individual images and these are overlaid on top of each other. By covering the graphic with a grid, only one of these individual images is visible at a time. By moving the graphic, the individual images become visible alternately in quick sequences and create the illusion of a film. The fact that our eyes can be so easily fooled in several ways plays a crucial role.

Jonathan Steffens 'work is thematically concerned with fantastic industrial worlds, with interlocking macchine parts that only produce movement in infinite rotation in order to keep themselves alive. The form follows a function that creates new forms whose function lies only in their own form.

Now drawing Pokémon has been one of my expertise. Hyakkiyakou is one of a common Japanese traditional ink drawing subjects. I have noticed that many of the Pokémons were inspired by Japanese myths and old folk tales, therefore I combine two of the elements into this book. I am glad that the collaboration with Rollbuch this time can build the book with action, make these Pokémon more alive.”

Electroence- phalography

Alice Yu born in Hong Kong and living in Berlin. In 2017, she founded the Prenzlauer Studio / Kunst-Kollektiv together with Dio Lau in Berlin, Germany, hoping to experiment and carve out a new form of artist-running studio merging with the community.  Her area of interest are mental issues, anti-psychiatry and the artistic strategies of participatory culture. Most of her work draw focuses on mental health. She believes that the mental state of each individual is a collective reflection of our society, it should not be pulled away from this context, should not be taken as an isolated or exceptional case.

The linear presentation for this work made me think of “electroencephalography”, a computer scan of our brain. I invite readers to pause my work at one of the scenery that describes their mental state of a moment.; as this work is much more like a landscape of my mental state. It becomes a painting that you can constantly change, depending on the readers mood.

ART
OCTO

Ann is a multidisciplinary designer and illustrator based in Berlin. What started as a passion for drawing in her childhood, later led to a never ending exploration of graphic arts, especially wood carving, etching and other analogue printing techniques. Within the five books she has published so far, the reader is takeninto a world of fables, animated with lyrical and mythical beings.

Octo is a fable about an octopus who falls in love with a sunken antique statue, that has been revealed by a storm. The story is a metaphor for the ambivalent search for security, the desire for freedom and the search for adventure. All etchings have been produced in the studio Alma Charta of the artist André Beuchat.

The Wolf Who Dreamed of Flying

The Rollbuch edition "The Wolf Who Dreamed of Flying" is about a wolf who is dreamily watching the birds fly and desires nothing more to be with them high in the air. After a miserable attempt to mimic the flight movements, a blackbird comes to the wolf, as she has observed him in his attempt. The story is inspired by a North American myth 'When the Wolf learned to fly from blackbirds', which Milou translated and reinterpreted in magical black and white woodcut illustrations.

ART
THE UPPER HAND

Since 2007, I have developped a personal universe influenced by corporate imagery, which I parody in chaotic and disquieting drawings, videos installations and objects. The precarity of existence, the pressures of social habits and the contained violence in authority are the background of many of my works which associate mind-numbing, repetitive tasks ( stamping, copying) with immediate, improvised situations influenced as much by a comic author such as André Franquin as by conceptual artists such as Douglas Huebler and On Kawara.

''The Upper Hand:'' is Nicolas Manenti first rollbook project. On an unconventional vertical format , he assembled agressive images and laconic idioms to create a striking and succint storyline about various forms of domination.

GRAPHIC NOVEL
L'ATTENTE

"For a graphic artist, the Rollbuch represents something sensual and pristine, – it feels like a bespoke home for images. It provides the potential to draw straight on, without having to think about a plot. The paper lay on the table, and whenever i had the time I added two or three characters to the queue. Eventually, I printed the four metre long drawing onto wood-pulp board, and after some tests one single colour, varying in density, proofed to be the most coherent colouration." (Yannik Lüdemann)

LITERATURE
"VOR LAUTER STAUNEN"

"As an avowed fan of Rilke, I got inspired by his poem "Vor lauter Lauschen und Staunen sei still". I had the ambition to use the filmic aspect of the Rollbuch –  the small instant when the viewer is left unsure about what's going to happen next. I wanted to surprise. At the same time i attempted to limit myself to drawing, and to create an atmosphere of clarity and poetry that does justice to Rilke's lines. It was a long way to my 10 metres of Rilke – but well worth the patience." (Elke Ehninger)
